abstract 浄土教と密教は、より大きな大乗仏教の伝統の中で、決して両立しえない二つの道であるかのように学ばれることがしばしばである。中世初期の日本仏教、ないし「鎌倉仏教」に閲する学問の多くは概して、所謂「新仏教」 (禅、日蓮、浄土)にばかり注目し、密教の重要性を実質的に無視してきた。この論文では、密教と浄土教という両形態の仏教の思想および実践の重複する領域、そして、中世初期の日本でいまだ続いていた密教の重要性という主題に関する進行中の対話に貢献するために、高野山の学僧である道範(1179・1252) の顕密浄土教思想と筆者が論及するものに注目し、その道範の『秘密念仏抄』内の鍵となる文章を検討する。高野山と平安京における道範の人生と教育という文脈で同書を検討することを通じて、筆者はこの話題に関する多くの学問から出発し、道範が、単に密教と浄土教の聞の「シンクレティック」な見方、あるいは浄土教に関する正統な真言の見解を組織したのではなく、その見解はむしろ、顕教と密教両方の仏教の実践を活用・包摂し、そうして、中世初期の文化コンテクストの典型的な事例となる、浄土教に対する顕密の対話的なアプローチを構成しているだろう点を離論する。
